History & Background
The city and its surroundings is more than a functional superstructure; is a social and cultural concept of high complexity, a controversial but stimulating emotional fabric and an ecosystem full of energy, creativity and options. When the city and architectural elements are decontextualized, their appearance and their image in the environment become an object of hatred turning it into a battlefield with a desire for destruction where the values are lost, causing a psychological reaction – DISAPPOINTMENT.The solution to combat violence, or to ensure the longevity for any kind of public intervention like this is through EDUCATION, this creates more opportunities, and is formed urban culture. The draft SALSIPUEDES can soon become an opportunity to promote collective awareness of citizens on the visual and structural values of urban spaces, sensitizing them to commit to preserving the environment.
"Salsipuedes" is an avenue full of color and Panamanian identity that is not very popular with locals and tourists visiting the city, this is due to lack of maintenance and deterioration of place that seems like a place where violence occures, but it is a safe place as street traders care of each other and protect the place, trying to lift and give a better impression of the avenue.Another reason why it is not haunted, it is because it has become a fully enclosed by the merchandise and materials used as architectural enclosure place. This prevents air circulation and natural lighting, turning the interior into an impassable and warmer than the outside area.
The target of this project is to intervene not in a drastically time, but in a gradually change, preventing for the sellers to not feel excluded, In this way they are integrated in a participatory manner and identity is preserved, the colors and essence that both identify this avenue.
